INDEED it is that time of year again where we raise money for a cause! On May 31st we will be raising money for Soaringwords, a non-profit based in NYC who helps bring joy and healing to hospitalized children. As an intern with this organization it has been a pleasure to see "behind the scenes" work that CEO and Founder Lisa and the Soaringwords core team do. The organization has accomplished SO MUCH and I am proud to be one of the many Zumba instructors raising money for them!
Check out this video and their website Soaringwords.org to learn more about the amazing and inspiring work they do!
A new year is upon us and I cannot help but think about how grateful I am for all of the people who have crossed my path. In January 2014, I had the wonderful opportunity to travel to Uganda through NYU's Global Programs. The class is called Community Building through Teaching, Creating, Performing: Dance Education in Uganda. Taught by the amazing Deborah Damast (NYU) and equally astounding Ugandan teachers from Mekerere University, those two and a half weeks were the best experiences of my life. The first week we had the opportunity to learn traditional Ugandan dance and song and lesson plan in small teams, the second week we delivered our lessons to over 60 children! Although it is difficult to say every detail of this amazing experience I do want to share that the talent and creativity of these children was amazing to see. In Uganda I learned that dance is a form of cultural expression, showing their histories through movement. Dance is also a tool for social change, where many of the children who may be orphaned or have had very tough life experiences have the opportunity to smile and show their talents, through dance. Learning and sharing the love of dance is something they could be proud of and the deep connection with dance to that aspect of their lives was so amazing to see. At the end of the learning experience we had the opportunity to perform at the National Theater in Kampala, Uganda (their version of Carnegie Hall). In front of a packed house kids, adults, and members of the community from all over came to see all of us perform. It was absolutely an amazing feeling to share what we learned and created together with the community. Now that I have returned to NYC, I am still working on making sense of where this experience fits into my life. One thing I do know is that my direction will be strong in the pursuit of dance and community building.
Beginning December 14th, a new Shape Up NYC instructor Celeste will be taking over the sizzling Saturday classes at noon!! Please join Celeste because the party will NOT stop!!
